OWN "Devons Online Supermarket"
OWN 'Devon's Online Supermarket' is a family owned and run business based a few minutes from Exeter City Centre. Founder and Owners Dave Stickland, Keith Rawlinson & Sue John have spent over 40 years between them in food retailing and marketing. They all have a deep passion for food, not just for its taste and provenance but for what they believe is foods front line role (together with exercise of course) in keeping us healthy and happy.
OWN was born out of the realisation that most of us who truly want to live off local food often cannot attain this dream, due firstly to the multiple locations that have to be visited in order to fulfil the needs of a weekly shop and secondly the high price of food that is often produced for special occasions.
The team at Own believe that for a sustainble future food must localise itself in order to:
1. Create local jobs
2. Support local communities
3. Reduce fuel consumption by reducing food miles
This is not to the exclusion of appropriate products being imported where they are not economically viable to be grown or produced in the UK, after all if we don't buy bananas, coffee, sultanas etc, who will suppport those poorer communities.
Why use a Local Online Supermarket?
Most of us have our beliefs and priorities about food, the most common ones being:
Organics - How do organic farming & growing methods really benefit the planet and how much better for me is it? If I don't buy organic what effect do the pesticides and traditional fertilisers used when producing non-organic food have on me, my family and the environment.
Food miles - Whether organic or not, is it right that we purchase a fruit from Argentina or New Zealand that may have caused its own weight in aviation fuel to be consumed getting to its destination?
Our health - What and how much can we eat in order, not just to keep us healthy but to enhance our health?
Animal Welfare - Regardless of food quality, how are our animals cared for?
Financial - When buying food, who exactly is benefiting and what living are the producers able to afford compared to the stakeholders in the large supermarkets.
Community - Can communities and local businesses stay healthy when a vast majority of us are unwilling or unable to support our local suppliers, producers and growers?
We believe all of these to be important and offer ourselves as a 'onestop' shop for local producers, growers and suppliers, in order to help you address some of these issues.
